iPhone App Advertising

I’ve been doing iPhone app advertising for the past couple years.

It’s exciting and fun, but there aren’t many books on the subject. You’ve got to learn as you go. So I want to share a little about what I’ve learned.

Here are where I’ve spent my marketing dollars:

  • iPhone ad networks
  • Incentivized downloads
  • Promotional activities
It’s a process that takes:
  • Creative and analytical thinking
  • $$$ to spend
  • Knowing where to spend/not spend
  • Technology to track conversions
  • In most cases creative and a plan
  • Knowledge of how to measure your ROI
You have to be willing to test, make mistakes, and learn.
Hope that helps.

Cost per Install (CPI) Companies

March 17th, 2011

With so many apps in the iTunes app store, you’ve GOT TO market your app. Honestly…if you have no marketing budget, it’ll be very hard to succeed.

So IF you have money, where should you spend it?

I’d suggest you test some of the cost per install companies below.

How it typically works:

  • These CPI companies promote your app within other apps
  • Users are typically incentivized to download your app in some way
  • The most common way to incentivize users is to offer them some kind of virtually currency for downloading your app
  • The user gets something they want (coins, poker chips, etc), you get a download (and hopefully better ranking), and the app developer gets paid a bid from the price that you pay per install

Here is a list of a few of CPI companies:

  • Apperang
  • Flurry
  • Tapjoy
  • TapZilla
  • WeReward

Check em out! Good luck,

Cost per Install Marketing Explained

February 12th, 2011

Cost per Install (CPI) Marketing is sort of how it sounds. You only pay when someone installs your app.

Here is a step by step of how it might work:

  • You made an iPhone app, but very few people have downloaded it.
  • You find a CPI company like Tapjoy.
  • You set up an account with them.
  • Install their SDK on your app.
  • Fund your account.
  • They promote your app on other apps.
  • When a user downloads your app and installs it, you pay them

Does that make sense?

Ideally  you drive enough downloads in a short amount time, so that you drive up the app store rankings.

Does that make sense? Good luck!

SEO Mistakes to Avoid

So many websites get set up without search engine optimization included in the plan.

Here are 7 SEO areas you should never neglect:

  • Domain
  • Page title
  • URL
  • Content
  • Incoming Links
  • Meta keywords
  • Meta description

Each of these areas should be considered when you are building a new website or creating new content.

You’ll need marketing people and technical folks involved in the process.

Favorite iPhone App Ad Networks for Publishers

December 11th, 2010

Making money with iPhone apps is not as easy as it seems.

Do you have paid apps?
Do you have in app purchases?
Do you have banners ads in your apps?

I like the model of having banners ads in your apps. But which  ad networks should you work with?

My 3 favorite mobile ad networks are iAds, Google AdSense, and Millennial Media.

Here is what I like MOST about each:

  • iAds = higher CPMs than others
  • Google = higher fill rates than other
  • Millennial = a good combination of both

I’d encourage you to test all 3 networks and see which ones are right for your apps.

iPhone App Marketing – Be Analytical!

October 24th, 2010

iPhone app development can be costly. Either it takes a ton of your time or $30,000-$300,000 for an app development company to build you an app.

So if you are going to spend either that much time or money you better be analytical about it!

You’ll need to create projections for things like your:

  • Development budget
  • Marketing budget
  • How much a customer will be worth you to
  • How much it’ll cost to get new customers

All this is apart of iPhone app marketing analysis.

If you want to be successful, you’ll need to not only create a great app, but have a great budget as well!

iPhone App Marketing – Be Creative

I’m not the most creative person. I’m a bit more analytical than creative.

I’m working on it.

It is KEY to be creative when marketing iPhone apps.

Why?

They iPhone platform is SO visual and entertainment focussed. If you are not creative, you are likely to bore customers who will either never return or even worse tell others how bored they were with your app.

Here are ways I encourage you to be creative:

1) Thinking up new apps
2) Making top notch visuals
3) Creating/running ads

So go do it! Be creative. Go out and beat up on the competition.

Top iPhone App Review Sites

July 9th, 2010

iPhone app review sites are SWAMPED with developers trying to “love” from their reviews. Of course as a developer, you hope you’ll get a great review that will help your app get more downloads and because of that help your app get ranked higher.

So it is important to even contact these sites?

If you already have tons of apps and downloads maybe not as much. But if you are struggling to get any free iPhone app marketing that you can, they are important.

Why?

- People visit them and will drive downloads for you
- Other bigger fish (Apple & TechCrunch) may find you on these sites
- Consumer confidence in your apps will grow as you

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Finding iPhone App Marketing Data

June 12th, 2010

When making iPhone app marketing plans you NEED DATA.

What platforms do I develop for?
Where and how much money do I need to market my apps?

These questions and more can be answered by finding metrics reports from various companies.

Making decisions without data is flying blind. The more data you have, the better decisions you can make.

Read this post on iPhone App Marketing Data to learn where I go for my data.
